Introduction: A one-day servant event might be just the right opportunity for your congregation to use their talents and make a difference in your community.
Summary: Long-term, distant mission trips can present financial and time constraints that prevent people from serving. People still have a heart to serve. A one-day event allows them to use their different areas of ability, expertise, and interest.
How a one-day event is organized:
- Establish leadership team
- Start early and learn from other churches that have done this
- Look for a wide variety of experiences; examples:
- Full day or half day
- Hands-on (weeding, building fence)
- Less mobile people can make blankets
- Deliver blankets
- Sing or visit at nursing home
- Put together dinner kits for food pantries
- Find organizations to partner with
- Create a list (note where special skills are needed; even “ability to stand for a long period of time”)
- Introduce to church appropriately (sermon series leads up to event; we are loved people of God and sent to the people in our community)
- Celebration service provides closure

- Leadership team is important
- Consistency is key (registration is same weekend every year; event is same weekend every year)
- Find projects you know your people will love to use their skill sets with
