Overflowing Hearts - a free devotion for this week's meetings

By Gail Marsh

Quickly pour a carbonated drink into a glass, and almost immediately, the glass overflows! More and more bubbles erupt and run over, even after you’ve stopped pouring!

This is one way to picture what happens within a heart touched by God’s grace. Learning the basic truth that God loves me (ME!) gets the process of effervescence started.

Hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love (Psalm 130:7 ESV).

To learn that my heavenly Father sent his only Son, Jesus, to die and rise for me (yes, ME!) - well, that invigorates!

The grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 1:14 ESV).

When the power of the Holy Spirit works within a grateful heart, joy can’t help but bubble over. And over. And over! Faith’s joy effervesces into cheerful service.

May the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow (1 Thessalonians 3:12 NLT).

How do you maintain joy as you serve? Stay in the Word! It keeps the bubbles coming!

I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding (Philippians 1:9 NLT).

Joy is contagious! Motivating! Sustaining! And essential for ongoing heartfelt service. So . . . how is joy maintained as you commit your hands and your heart to service in God’s Kingdom? Here are some things to consider:

  • Let God’s Word cheer your heart each day.
  • Pray for your ministry, the people who serve with you, and the people you serve.
  • Take care of yourself: eat timely, healthy meals; get good rest; exercise to boost your mood (even a brisk walk works wonders).
  • Keep priorities correctly ordered: God, family, service to others.
  • Allow yourself some fun, away from volunteering. Take that vacation or long weekend to refresh your joy.
  • Keep focused on the cross of Jesus. A few minutes of praise and thanksgiving offered to him each day renews faith and enhances joy!
