Introduction: Ryan Frank gives us food for thought about setting, adjusting, and celebrating goals.

Summary:

“A dream without goals is just a dream.”

In a world of distractions, focus is difficult. The importance of goals is that they accomplish focus.

Setting Goals (choose different areas of life):

  • Where am I right now?
  • Where do I want to go? Who do I want to be?
  • What are some things I can do to get there? What is the time frame for these things?

Don’t make it too hard—use the simple questions above.

Find someone to help you be accountable. That person can cheer you on along the way, pull you back from distractions, and help you stay on track.

What happens when life happens and goals need to change? The purpose of goals is to stay focused; we can adjust along the way.

When distractions happen, understand the difference between the urgent and the important.

Free yourself up to do the important by getting efficient and being a good delegator.

Celebrating goals is hard because we’re busy, but it’s worth taking even a few moments to recognize that accomplishment. It’s also good for our teams.

Setting goals along the way:

  • 2 to 3 big goals for the year
  • 2 to 3 goals for the month that will accomplish the yearly goals
  • Weekly goals to move the monthly goals forward
  • Daily goals to get the weekly goals done

Thought Starters:

  • What are the main areas where I want to keep my focus? For those areas . . .
    • Where am I right now?
    • Where do I want to go? Who do I want to be?
    • What are some things I can do to get there? What is the time frame?
