Woven - a free devotion for this week's meetings

By Jane Fryar

You formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well (Psalm 139:13–14).

Artists who work in fabric have nearly limitless techniques available to them. Quilting. Collage. Weaving. Embroidery. Trapunto. Patchwork. This list barely scratches the surface.

In recent years, the popularity of textile art has simply exploded. From handbags to wall hangings, artisans craft uniquely lovely designs. Each exclusive design whispers to our hearts, expressing much about the imagination, skill, and care of the artist.

Psalm 139 describes a different kind of artistry, but artistry nonetheless: you wove me in my mother’s womb!

No one can mass-produce textile art—not without losing its soul. Neither does our Creator, our heavenly Father, mass-produce his children. He weaves us, one by one. He never drops a stitch, never makes a mistake. His artistry whispers to our hearts, expressing much about the imagination, skill, and care of our Creator.

Each cell, each nerve, each vein, each little finger and each big toe, each earlobe, each eyelash—all these and countless other details besides—demonstrate the meticulous care our Creator took when he knitted us together.

Perhps though, like me, you sometimes find yourself wondering about all that, doubting it even. Maybe when I was a newborn, maybe then the Lord’s artistry was apparent. But today? Is that still true? Am I still “fearfully and wonderfully made”?

Yes! Yes! A thousand times, yes! Though we have often questioned our Lord’s intentions, criticized his artistry, and acted in ugly ways toward those around us, we are even so God’s unique creations, precious to him.

The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing (Zephaniah 3:17 ESV).

In Jesus and his cross, our Creator is also our Savior. He whispers words of forgiveness and love over us, quieting our fears.

So listen! Believe! Rest in him!
