The Prayer of a Modern-Day Prodigal Son

(Begin by reading Luke 15:11–24.)

Heavenly Father, you have invited us to call you our Father, and that invitation, based on Jesus’ sacrifice for us, brings us such comfort! You want us to understand how precious we are to you. You call us your beloved children. You forgive our every sin because Jesus died for us.

A deep and ever-deepening relationship with you brings our only true joy. The world around us offers nothing like it. The world around us knows only pretense and short-lived pleasures. These things ultimately bring only emptiness of heart and soul.

Keep us from ever straying away from you, kind Father. And if we ever should, draw us back quickly. Remind us that you offer us pardon, acceptance, and the only spiritual food that can nourish our souls. We ask this for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
