Praying the Lord's Prayer . . . on the mission field

By Tim Wesemann

Editor’s note: This in-depth version of the Lord’s Prayer is slightly adapted from CTA’s new book, On A Mission: My Mission Trip Journal. This book features Bible verses, words of encouragement, and plenty of journaling space to use before, during, and after mission experiences. God’s blessings as your ministry shares the Gospel message with those near and far this summer!

Lord Jesus, when your disciples asked you to teach them to pray, you gave them a gift - a prayer outline. Hear, as we pray that prayer now. Teach us to pray, as you taught the Twelve.

Our Father, who art in heaven . . . (Reflect on the relationship you have with God because of Jesus. Think about how that relationship is growing on this trip.)

Hallowed be thy name . . . (Reflect on the holiness of God’s name and what it means to you now.)

Thy kingdom come . . . (Reflect on Christ’s kingdom and how you see it growing in you and through you.)

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven . . . (Ask that God reveal his will for you each moment - on this trip and after your return home.)

Give us this day our daily bread . . . (Reflect on God’s life-sustaining gifts, especially over the past few days.)

And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us . . . (Confess your sins; reflect on being fully forgiven and fully forgiving.)

And lead us not into temptation . . . (Reflect on the Lord’s protection from Satan’s temptations.)

But deliver us from evil . . . (Reflect on Jesus’ victory over sin, death, and Satan.)

Jesus, I pray all this with joy, knowing that the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours, now and forever! . . . (Praise your Lord for who he is eternally!)

Amen! Make it so, Lord. Amen.

When you’re finished praying, challenge your group to consider these thought starters: What did you learn about the Lord’s “mission field” that you can use at home from now on? What first steps will you take to begin using those lessons? Now that you are home, what new specifics will you add to your prayer list?
