Finding Joy

Have you ever found a penny while walking?  It doesn’t happen often but it happened to me this morning and I am always surprised. I am still amazed by the fact that I once found a quarter while walking in the dark. What are the chances?

Have you been able to find joy in the midst of this pandemic? Joy can be difficult to find in the face of so many losses. Which of these losses are true for you?  Loss of job? Loss of health? Loss of free time? Loss of purpose? Loss of freedom? Loss of income?  Loss of a loved one?

Add on top of that all the little disappointments that have occurred: no outings, no traveling, no school, no social gatherings, no celebrations, and the list goes on.

Joy has been in short supply for some time. However, it is not lost; and I promise you, it is easier to find than that penny on the road.

When life is hard, it is easy to focus on your circumstances.  All that is happening feels overwhelming and suffocating.

When you feel burdened by your losses, come to Jesus.  He has true and lasting joy to give to you; joy that will shine through even the darkest hour.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to “fix your thoughts on Jesus” (Hebrews 3:1 NIV), change your focus, renew your mind, (Romans 12:2) and offer him a “sacrifice of praise” (Hebrews 13:15 ESV).

God can help you find joy as you think about who he is and all that he has done for you. Turn your eyes away from your losses and focus on Jesus, who “fills everything in every way” (Ephesians 1:23 NIV).

What can you do to change your focus? Use God’s Word to pray, praise, sing, read, meditate, and memorize.  Below are a few short verses to help you start.

 The chances of finding a penny on the road are usually pretty slim. The chances of   finding joy with Jesus?  Guaranteed, 100%!!!

 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift.  2 Corinthians 9:15 (NIV)

 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:57 (ESV)

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?  Romans 8:32 (ESV)

 “Be still and know that I am God.”   Psalm 46:10 (ESV)

 For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”  Isaiah 41:13 (ESV)

 For the Lord your God is living among you.
    He is a mighty savior.
He will take delight in you with gladness.
    With his love, he will calm all your fears.
    He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.  Zephaniah 3:17  (NLT)

 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
    Serve the Lord with gladness!
    Come into his presence with singing!

 Know that the Lord, he is God!
    It is he who made us, and we are his;
    we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
    and his courts with praise!
    Give thanks to him; bless his name!

 For the Lord is good;
    his steadfast love endures forever,

and his faithfulness to all generations.  Psalm 100 (ESV)
