“I just mow lawns.”
Whenever people would talk about the ways they served at the church, Harold would always say, “I just mow lawns.” He was convinced his service was far less important than leading a Bible study, preparing a fellowship meal, or planning vacation Bible school.
As Harold worked, he always smiled and waved at the cars driving past the church—at every car driving past. He never thought twice about it.
One Sunday in midsummer, that changed. A new family visited the church. After the service, Harold introduced himself. “We know you!” the family exclaimed. “You’re that nice man who always waves at us!”
In truth, Harold was not just mowing lawns. He was waving people into the kingdom of God.
There is no such thing as small service for the Savior. The Lord Jesus is eager to use your efforts for his greater purposes. After all, he’s the One who multiplied a little boy’s loaves and fishes to feed thousands! He’s the One who called simple fishermen and a despised tax collector to proclaim the Gospel. He’s the One who constructed your salvation from two pieces of rough wood and three common nails.
Your Lord will use your small service to achieve his major purposes. You may stand in front of the congregation to lead worship or you may sit on a lawnmower and drive in circles. Either way, the Savior will make of it what he will:
Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV).
