Pause and Ponder God’s Peace
This text originally appeared in one of CTA’s Christmas devotional books. Although the book is no longer in print, the message of peace that God has given us through Jesus Christ remains true today and every day. Let these words calm your spirit and multiply your joy this Christmas season!
Peace! The Christmas angels announced it: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace . . .” (Luke 2:14 ESV). The Prince of Peace had come to bring great gifts from heaven to earth: “By faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1 ESV).
Yet, even at Christmastime - especially at Christmastime - peace often escapes us. Too busy . . . too anxious . . . too overwhelmed by grief or by today’s to-do list . . . we struggle simply to make it through the day, the week, the season.
Be still. Take a breath. Personalize God’s promises. Let the Prince of Peace do for you and in you what he came to do. Let him be your peace!
Prayer: Dear Jesus, Christmastime is seldom a time of stillness on our planet or, truth be told, in my own life. Like so many, I shift my already busy life into an even higher gear. At times, I become frantic, even panicky. I think of all the things that could go wrong, worry about my family, and second-guess my own decisions, all while trying to fit more special events and tasks into my calendar!
Invade my anxiety, Lord Christ. Bring your peace. Let your compassion descend on my heart like a blanket of newly fallen snow. Quiet my roiling worries and bring me to a stillness that experiences lasting joy in the full salvation you give. Amen.
