Glorious - a free devotion for this week's meetings

By Jane Fryar

The glory that you have given me I have given to them (John 17:22 ESV)

Tender. Sweet. Uplifting. Whispers can be all these and more. Throughout Scripture, the one true God whispers to our hearts, “You are my very own daughter, a royal princess, a crown of beauty.” How amazing! And how wonderful!

Not all whispers, though, promote love. Sad to say, whispers of jealousy, of gossip, of disdain too often escape the lips of the Lord’s children.

That’s why our Brother Jesus prayed so earnestly for unity and peace in the family of God. He prayed in earnest for it on the very night before he died. It was one of his last prayers on earth. And the Holy Spirit saw to it that this prayer was preserved for us in the pages of Holy Scripture:

I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me (John 17:20–23 ESV).

Simple words. So simple, in fact, that we easily read right over them, missing their impact. Uninterrupted love leads to unity between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This, in turn, magnifies the glory they share.

As we, the children of God, receive his love, we return love to God and grow in love for others in his family. The unity created by that love shows the Savior’s glory to all the world. It invites them to join us in faith and in the forgiven, eternal life he offers.

We are one, one with God and with each other in the family of God. This unity, the unity of love and truth, is our glory!
