All That Remains- a free devotion for Lent

By Rodney L. Rathmann

You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. . . . But you are the same, and your years will have no end (Hebrews 1:10 - 12 ESV).

Before beginning, read Luke 21:29 - 33.

It’s not a very reassuring statement: “Heaven and earth will pass away” (Luke 21:33 ESV). We can hardly bear to imagine everything being taken away. Our wealth, our family, our life - there would be nothing left - except the Word of God and our faith in Jesus.

No matter what this earthly life brings, all of Jesus’ promises are certain. The grace, mercy, and forgiveness he offers have no end! And, our Savior will return one day to take us to the mansion he has prepared (John 14:2). Not even death on a cross and three days in a tomb could stop him.
For discussion or personal reflection: how might you intentionally live your life in light of Jesus’ promise to come again?

Editor’s note: Today’s devotion comes from CTA’s brand-new prayer journal for the Lenten season, Crucified. Glorified. The journal takes readers through the six weeks leading up to Easter with a distinct focus on the things Jesus taught and experienced from Palm Sunday through Easter morning.
