Today we are going to learn about some amazing things. Who knows what amazing means?
(Let volunteers share ideas; affirm definitions like “wonderful,” “unbelievable,” and astonishing.”) I am going to read some sentences. If you think what I read about is amazing, open your eyes really wide—without moving anything else and without saying anything. Got it? Let’s try!
* Cats can make more than 100 different sounds.
* Some scientists believe it rains diamonds on Neptune. This planet may have a layer of diamonds hundreds of miles deep!
* A woodpecker can peck more than 20 times a second.
* The famous baseball player Babe Ruth kept a cabbage leaf under his hat. He thought it would keep him cool.
* There is no word in English that rhymes with orange.
* Butterflies taste with their feet.
Some of those facts are kind of silly. Some of them are also pretty amazing. Here’s the most amazing fact of all. The Bible says, “God is love” (1 John 4:8 KJV).
Do you believe this? I hope you do, but this amazing news of God’s love is so good, it’s almost too good to believe! Why would God want to love us? We sometimes disobey him. We sometimes hurt other people by what we say and do. We sometimes fight with our friends or call our brothers and sisters bad names. Sometimes we’d rather stay home and watch cartoons when it’s time for church. We sometimes forget to pray or to say thank you to God for all he’s done for us.
Wow! We sin a lot—kids and grown-ups alike! But amazingly, God our heavenly Father still goes on loving us. He loves us on Christmas and Easter and Valentine’s Day—and every other day of the year, too. He even sent Jesus to live on earth to be our Big Brother. Jesus obeyed God perfectly, and now God counts Jesus’ perfect obedience as our own. God sees us as perfect because of Jesus’ perfect life, the life he lived for us. That’s pretty amazing!
And there’s even more. We deserved to be punished forever for our sins, but God didn’t want to punish us. Jesus said, “Father, punish me instead.” That’s how much Jesus loves you! He died on the cross in your place. He died so God wouldn’t have to punish you! He died so you could have peace with God now, here on earth, and so you can one day live in joy with God in heaven.
Here’s another amazing fact: We can love God and receive his love right now, right this minute. And we can love God and receive his love in heaven. God’s love will never end. God will never stop loving us, for “God is love.”
That makes me feel safe, even when bad things happen in my family. That love helps me show love to others even when I’m angry and don’t feel like being kind. That love gives me joy and courage even when I have to do hard things.
Jesus’ love will do this for you, too! Aren’t you glad that God is love?
